Parasitology Unit of the Department of Medical Microbiology at the Academic Medical Centre
The Academic Medical Center (AMC) is one of the foremost research institutions in the Netherlands, as well as one of its largest hospitals. Over 7000 people work here to provide integrated patient care, fundamental and clinical scientific research, and teaching. The AMC complex houses the University Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Amsterdam as well as the Emma Children’s Hospital and the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development. This concentration of expertise makes the centre a breeding ground for fruitful scientific national and international collaboration.
The Parasitology Group of the Royal Tropical Institute was recently integrated in the Department of Medical Microbiology creating one of the largest and strongest research groups focusing on Parasitology in the Netherlands. The current Parasitology group has gained ample experience in the development, evaluation and implementation of diagnostic procedures and the development of molecular techniques for the detection and quantification of very low numbers of parasites in blood samples. The research is further focussed on drug resistance and development of new medicines. The disease focus is on malaria, undifferentiated fevers, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis and cryptosporidiosis. The Parasitology Unit has an extensive network of collaborative research institutes in the Netherlands and abroad, in particular in sub-Saharan Africa.
Forsite Diagnostics Ltd. (trading as Abingdon Health), York, UK
Forsite (SME) specialised in contract development and manufacture of rapid diagnostics (RDs) for point of care and on-site use. The company (established January 2007, registered number: 5696673) is a spin-out from the UK Government’s Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera). Private investment allowed FD to move into high quality accommodation incorporating state of the art equipment for high volume manufacturing of RDs. In 2009 the strategic decision was taken to pursue opportunities in human healthcare diagnostics, with FD offering contract services to EU diagnostic companies. With ISO9001 and ISO13485 accreditation, Forsite has seen rapid growth in numbers and geographical spread of its customer base for development and manufacturing services. FD has a staff complement of 21. FD has been active in EC-funded projects throughout its life, currently in 4 projects, the most significant and relevant being MALACTRES. Since 2012 Forsite Diagnostics has been part of the Abingdon Health Group.
Q-Bioanalytic GmbH, Bremerhaven, Germany
Q-Bioanalytic produces analytical PCR and Real-Time PCR test kits and its expertise lies in development and validation of PCR based test systems. Q-Bioanalytic is employing experts in molecular biology, bioinformatics and in food microbiology. QBA purchased the license for the commercial use of the technology from Applied Biosystems Inc. The portfolio of QBA comprises several Real-Time PCR kits for pathogens and more than 20 based on classical PCR. QBA produces also DNA purification kits based on paramagnetic nano-particles for an effective DNA cleaning in difficult matrices. The kits are sold worldwide by their main distributor VWR International. QBA also runs a service laboratory accredited according to ISO. QBA employs staff who are licensed to act as experts for examination of officially retained samples (cross checking) in accordance with §43 of the German Food Law and Commodity Goods Law (LFGB). QBA runs a BSL2 and holds labs equipped with all necessary items for molecular biology including 4 Real-Time and 3 classical PCR Cyclers.
